I support you wholeheartedly and encourage you to continue with your valuable work. As a retired nurse and mental health nurse, I have long been aware of the serious health consequences of alcohol use and abuse. We mustn’t allow ourselves to be blinded by cultural norms that lead to such destruction and disease. Continue to challenge the status quo.

A year ago I decided to stop drinking alcohol. It had long been the biggest contributor to the issues in my life, without necessarily realising it at the time. After I stopped drinking, I stumbled across SITC. SITC was a major driving force for me to stick to it. Simply knowing about this community plus seeing the good news stories that frequent SITC’s social media has been my anchor. I purchased a red and blue cap last year and continue to proudly wear them. I just wish there was more designs! 🤣

Thank you for your extraordinary work Shanna and the Sober in the Country supporters and community. I made the decision to be sober 11+ years ago because I didn't like how much control alcohol had in my life, nor how much space it occupied in my mind. Living in a remote outback town this shrank my social circle considerably, but it was a price worth paying for freedom. I appreciate the community you are so beautifully nurturing to provide peer support to those who are isolated in their journey to less or no alcohol - literally and metaphorically.

Let's be honest, this cutting back, quitting drinking or normalising not drinking is well overdue. Also a mention to the incredible founder of SITC deserves much more than an OAM, the tenacity, patience, heart and soul of Shan and Tim is inspirational and as someone who is also helping men and women in Rural Australia, we deeply advocate for SITC and the mission they have which is saving lives daily, I wish we could give more. Well done team.

I have been a member of SITC since 2019 and watched as Shan, and her very small team, with very few resources, are changing attitudes in the bush by creating conversations around alcohol use and culture. Every town has a pub or 2 in its centre, and these are important places for the community, but not everyone can drink alcohol. Making it #OK2SAYNO and having a wide range of non alcoholic beverages on offer keeps everyone happy and small communities thriving.

Thank you for your work. And thank you for pushing that it’s ok not to have a drink. Each year I do a food and alcohol detox to reset my body. The only struggle I have always had was not me, but others feeling uncomfortable that I was not drinking with them. It makes you realise it truly is a part of our culture and it needs to be accepted that not you don’t need alcohol to have a great time together. I wish you every success with your fundraising and I hope it helps a lot of people.

I had an extremely toxic relationship with alcohol from my first drink at 16 right through to my last drink at 42 (4.5 yrs ago) and, believe it or not, one of the hardest parts of giving up was having to explain/defend/justify my choices to my peers. The conversation NEEDS to change from ‘What do you mean you’re not drinking? Why? What’s wrong with ya?’ to a simple ‘Okay’ or ‘Yep, no worries’ and then moving on. And it’s amazing to see that this IS happening. The landscape and stigma around not drinking in our rural communities HAS been changing - slowly but steadily! More often than not, the reaction I get now (compared to 4 years ago) when I say I don’t drink is quite positive and I truly believe this due to the hard work Shan and all of her team at SITC have put in over the last decade. Their work is having a huge impact in Rural Australia and the message of ‘It’s OK to say NO’ is really getting out there. So that’s why I continue to donate each year. Thank you for the work you do SITC. Invaluable 💚💛

Your advocacy and work in this space has made me think critically on how we can make events, conferences or workshops in the bush more inclusive and supportive of peoples choices (orange juice as the only option doesn't cut it). Ag businesses are working through some stressful conditions at the moment and often turn to alcohol to self medicate, and if in my day-to-day work I can support our great, generous rural people to make different choices to manage their stress - even better. This campaign and the work of Sober In the Country is so damn important, I actually struggle to put words to it. As a fierce advocate and facilitator in the Ag Mental Health space - everything we do is nothing, if we don't address the impact of alcohol. It's not about prohibition, instead as simple as it's "OK2SAYNO" and normalising non-drinking - for all of our sakes. Personally and across my work, I have seen the impact of alcohol across individuals, families, businesses and communities. As Shanna shares, there is not one family in rural Australia who has not been impacted by alcohol in some way. Each individual who turns to alcohol is trying to find a way to cope - and unless we normalise other options - it will continue to be the visible yet invisible beast that causes so much social harm. Shanna and team, I truly adore and am so damn grateful for everything you have done, everything you do, and everything you'll do in the future (hopefully now with more support).

Kicking the alcohol habit 8 years ago was tough, especially in a rural community where social life centres on the club and the pub, and while working in sectors where folk routinely say things like "you deserve a glass of wine". I believe we all deserve to feel accepted, healthy, welcome and whole, whether we're holding a cuppa, a tinny or a lem'n'lime'n'bittas, and want to support SITC's mission to help people who are struggling - like I did - to sober up and find clear-headed happiness and no-regrets mornings. Cheers Shanna and team - you're legends!

I lost an uncle to drink driving and another one is a quadriplegic from a drinking accident - both in their 20s. I have friends who battle with alcohol addiction in their 20s and many female friends who have experienced sexual assault due to alcohol. As someone who does not have a problem with alcohol but has frequently chosen not to drink in the rural landscape the stigmatisation, the exclusion and the harassment to drink is exhausting - and that's coming from someone who isn't battling an addiction. The current landscape of drinking in rural Australia isn't ok and that's why I fully support #OK2SAYNO. I love having fun and running amok but it doesn't have to involve alcohol and even if it does - that doesn't mean members of our community should feel excluded. Our mates and our families need us to support them better. Keep up the great work Shan and all those who spread the good message.

If you can help one young rural drinker to say no to getting "written off" at the pub, getting into a car drunk, being pressured to have "one more for the road" it would be amazing. Our lives were devastated due to an alcohol related death of our son and if we can change the mentality of our young ones before they hit drinking age it will be invaluable.

Learning and understanding more about my father’s addiction; the pain he carried and the struggles he faced, after losing him to it has brought a deeper awareness I never had before. It’s been incredibly healing to begin to understand what life may have felt like for him in the lead-up to his sudden passing. Of course, I wish I knew then what I know now. The education and insight I’ve gained through Sober in the Country has changed the way I see it all. But there’s comfort in knowing that other families might receive that awareness sooner - that it might help someone better understand, support, or even save a loved one. Sober in the Country hasn’t just provided education, it has helped me heal from my father’s addiction and passing. Thank you

Alcohol doesn’t discriminate and can quietly start to control you. Sober in The Country has helped me drastically change my life and my habits. As a mum of two beautiful girls who has had some really hard, horrible and scary things happen as a result of alcohol over the course of my life I knew I needed a change but I couldn’t do it alone. I hope if you are struggling whoever and wherever you are in the bush, Sober in the Country really does have your back and together we can try and shift the perception of alcohol as a fix all. To my husband, thank you for standing by me and while my story is not so bad compared to most maybe it will help another bush mum realise it’s ok to need help.

I always get asked when you going to start drinking, just have a quick one with me it’s Friday or Xmas or birthday. I simply reply with I’m all good thanks, I don’t miss it and I’m happy to have a soda water. IT’S OKAY TO SAY NO and be happy about it. The word is spreading and more people are becoming aware of it. SITC has helped change my whole perception around drinking. Growing up in a small country town (and family) that had alcohol at the centre of every single event, I never knew I had a choice to say no. My two boys are at stations up North, have been since they were 17 they are now 24 and 22. Whilst there are so many great things about outback communities, the drinking culture really fuels them and they use it to self medicate their ADHD and to fit in. I hope you really can get the message to these young men- they would not even consider the option of not drinking. They’d be laughed out of the stock camp! Even the moderation message would be great. Thank you for trying to make a difference now for the sake of their future!

This donation comes from the money I’ve saved over 5 years of living alcohol-free. I’m incredibly grateful for the sober community and for initiatives like Sober in the Country and The Big Shout that help people feel seen, supported, and less alone. Seeing non-drinking become more normalised gives me real hope that others can feel empowered to explore a sober life and know there is support waiting for them. Thank you for the work you do and the community you are building.

Your message is fantastic! It is so hard to find support in the outback that can be accessed at a time that is right for you (and that you don’t have to drive hours to get to). Your recognition that a supportive community, your friends, local clubs, local pubs, workplaces can do so much to help each other with small simple changes. For too long its been normalised to drink booze in the bush to fit in, to be a real man, at work, at sport, everywhere ya go its there. Well let me tell you some of the toughest blokes I have known have not drunk booze, they realized it was a issue and gave up, surrounded by it every day in the outback, now that is tough. We are lucky to have SITC to help bush people in need, one day it could be you or someone you love. Dig deep Australia, donate a big shout, and help out an amazing organisation helping so many people.

This donation is a fraction of what I used to spend on grog in a year. The work SITC does is saving lives, as it gently changes the narrative in the bush. It’s not just another “check in”, talk fest charity; it’s addressing the root cause, of so many increasingly common issues. I’m bloody grateful for the work they do, as it helped show me that there’s a beautiful life on offer, which I don’t need to escape with a drink.

If you are self-medicating with alcohol it’s not the right way to go and just makes things worse. Ditch the grog, sort the problems, one small step at a time. You can do it. Alternatively… If you can’t drink without turning into a dkhd, then don’t fkn drink.

I grew up in suburbia but now live in a rural town. SITC resonates across the whole country. Alcohol harm affected my family deeply, and I totally get that not all people turn nasty under the influence of alcohol but excessive drinking does leave lifelong scars. To me, the work SITC does is invaluable. If other families can be helped and the cycle of alcohol harm stopped, that would be amazing.

On behalf of our little mob to yours – we want to extend the most enormous, heartfelt gratitude to absolutely every single one of you – from Big Ag to small farmers, Mum & Dad donors, and the endless amazing individuals in between. Our inaugural The Big Shout Appeal has shown how much our communities care.

Thank you for giving us 189,000 reasons to keep getting up, showing up, and working hard to continue our life-saving work.

I recommend you read the comments from all across Australia on our ‘Wall of Legends’ above to understand the impact of our work. Everything I’ve been advocating for is validated fiercely here. Warning – it’ll make your heart explode with bright hope.

Your generosity is helping fund our powerful social impact and creating healthier and more sustainable bush communities for all by simply making it #OK2SAYNO (to booze). With your help, we can keep lighting the way and showing our mates that when we build gathering spaces that include and cater for all our mates thoughtfully with options beyond ‘just booze’ and token sugary soft drinks … we save lives.

Among many things, your generous support this year will allow us to expand our work, our #OK2SAYNO workshops, refine our peer-to-peer online support group, and train and equip ambassadors with 11 precious years of hard-won lived experience and learnings. (Read more about how we'll be putting your donations to work below).

Our long-term goal is to raise the bar on The Big Shout each year to ensure Sober in the Country is sustainable and will continue on into the future to not only supports rural Australians choosing less or no booze, but also to benefit young rural leaders for future generations.

We'll be back to run our next The Big Shout appeal February 2027. But in the meantime, you can donate any time at our regular donate page.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart, and from the hearts of our mob,

       xo

So what is The Big Shout?

Right now, a bush mate is battling with booze, isolated and suffering behind closed doors.

Through The Big Shout appeal, your virtual shouts will open the door to life-saving support and social inclusion for many of our rural mates doing it tough with booze.

Right now, a bush mate is battling with booze, isolated and suffering behind closed doors.

Right now, a bush mate is battling with booze, isolated and suffering behind closed doors.

Through The Big Shout appeal, your virtual shouts will open the door to life-saving support and social inclusion for many of our rural mates doing it tough with booze.

Today, your shout can open the door to life-saving support and social inclusion.

The Big Shout national appeal is built on the great Australian tradition of not hesitating to shout a mate a beer.
But we're asking those who'd typically love to shout a beer to instead shout a virtual round – the $$$ equivalent of a beer or a carton – so that your mateship and generosity can fund real help instead ... because some of our mates need a hand, not another beer in their hand.
Throughout the entire month of February, whether you're a drinker, a non-drinker or somewhere in between, shouting your support can literally change and save the lives of remote Australians fighting hidden battles with addiction and choosing to cut back grog.
Ready to donate? We'd love you to join the ranks of legends who've been chipping in to support country mates. Simply choose your virtual shout from the donation form or add a custom amount.
If you're not quite ready yet ... scroll on down the page to find out more about why our country mates truly need your help.

But with The Big Shout, each February we're asking those who’d typically love to shout a beer to instead shout a virtual round – the $$$ equivalent of a beer or a carton – so that your mateship and generosity can fund real help instead ... because some of our mates need a hand, not another beer in their hand.
Throughout the entire month of February each year, whether you're a drinker, a non-drinker or somewhere in between, shouting your support can literally change and save the lives of remote Australians fighting hidden battles with addiction and choosing to cut back grog.
Ready to donate now? Can't wait for next February to roll around ... simply use our regular donation form.

Why your support is needed now

Right now, tens of thousands of rural and remote Australians are struggling with alcohol harm and addiction in isolation with little to no access to the support they need ... leading to depression, social isolation, farm accidents, suicide, preventable early deaths and other devastating outcomes.

We're aiming to extend our charity's impact, linking our mates who want to cut back or cut out booze to the support they need, sharing stories of hope, and helping make sure everyone is included, no matter the kind of drink in their hand.
We can't offer this life-saving work without you. Every donation, big or small will have a huge impact.
And while The Big Shout appeal has closed until next February, you can still donate to support our remote and rural mates doing it tough with booze through our regular donation form.

      Why this campaign matters:

      Hidden struggles

Many of our rural friends are fighting often invisible battles with alcohol harm or addiction behind closed doors. They're suffering every day ... and chances are, you wouldn't even know it until it's too late.

      Pressure to drink

Out here in the country, our national identity and "bush pride" are often directly linked to grog. Our national survey found 96% of remote Australians who chose to say "no thanks" or "not today" to a drink faced severe pressure, bullying and the familiar line that "just one won't hurt you!". And while the intention of this is often camaraderie, its impact can be devestating.

      Devastating impacts

Alcohol harm and addiction are directly linked to all the "big ticket" issues that most severely impact bush communities, including farm accidents, depression, bullying, domestic violence, suicide,  preventable early deaths  and more. And it's not just the person fighting addiction who is impacted: it's their loved ones too.

      Scarce support

People living in rural or remote Australia are 150% more likely to experience harm from alcohol, yet only 17% get the help they need. Access to appropriate support is scarce for remote Australians often literally impossible to access due to geographic isolation, too city-centric, and/or impossible to afford.

And these are just a few of the reasons why your support is urgently needed.

Your virtual shouts donated through The Big Shout Appeal 2026  are helping us to:

Extend the reach of The Bush Tribe

The Bush Tribe is a safe, caring and carefully moderated online peer‑support network that's saved and changed the lives of thousands of rural Australians seeking to cut back or quit booze. In order to provide this non-judgemental, welcoming and supportive space – a place where rural people simply get around each other and share their own experiences, and resources that have helped them as well as cheer each other on – we need to provide trained moderators. With your shout, we can train more peer moderators and volunteers, allowing us to expand this online community so nobody is left alone or behind when they choose less or no booze.

Put practical tools in more hands

In the bush, booze is hardwired into our DNA: from socialising to celebrating, commiserations, business events, knock-off beers to simply drinking to "fit in. At Sober in the Country, we write and curate practical resources – like our Sober Toolbox – and connect vulnerable people to vital, vetted, trusted mental health providers and support organisations. Your donation helps us to continue creating and sharing these tools and supports, enabling mates and their loved ones to find their way towards recovery and vital, life-saving mental health support.

      Share more stories of hope

Our video storytelling changes lives by sharing authentic stories of a powerful cross-section of real bush people choosing a life with less or no booze. When it comes to overcoming addiction and cutting back, half the battle is won when people "see" themselves in others’ stories. So it's no exaggeration to say that our stories act as a lifeline. With your support, we can film and share more stories, and throw more lifelines to those who need to know they’re not alone and that change is absolutely possible.

      Build life‑saving partnerships

In remote regions, alcohol harm is far above the national average, yet support is well below the national average. We partner with like-minded organisations to advocate for and spread the word about the critical need for equitable support for remote Australians, from home‑based Telehealth detoxes to counselling and structured recovery programs. Your shout fuels these partnerships, bringing more urgent, life‑saving help to the bush.

      Train more ambassadors

Our founder Shanna Whan (AM) has spoken nationally for more than a decade to change the narrative around booze in the bush – pioneering change by showing how easily we can have conversations about booze and alcohol harm in the bush. Now, we’re equipping more ambassadors to deliver workshops and talks in communities and workplaces across remote Australia. With your support, we can train more ambassadors to amplify our message and what we know is working to help our remote Australians.

      Launch a men’s group

Men in the bush are our gravest concern: they're much harder to reach, less likely to seek help, and they've been taught the only way to "open up" or be vulnerable is through the lens of a brown bottle. We’re setting up a dedicated online rural men’s group to support those struggling with booze, so they can break their silence in a safe space among other men who are rural ... and who get it. Your shout helps us build this vital connection for the vulnerable blokes who need it most.

      Expand the reach of #OK2SAYNO

Our grassroots #OK2SAYNO (to booze) movement has already changed countless lives across the outback, from ensuring bush communities stock thoughtful alcohol-free drink options (more than just booze and sugary drinks) to equipping leaders and trainees on why it needs to be okay (always) for any of our mates to say "no" or "not today" to booze. With your support, we can expand our #OK2SAYNO movement, workshops and training nationally with an advertising campaign designed to reach more communities, workplaces, and families in remote areas of Australia where alcohol harm is high and support is scarce. Your shout will help us amplify this life-saving message nationwide.
